Marketing for Nonprofits

Posted on July 13, 2020July 13, 2020 by Ronn Torossian

When it comes to nonprofit organizations, most of the time, their resources are tight and the teams are smaller when compared to other businesses. However, nonprofit organizations still need marketing campaigns that will promote their services, while also bringing the nonprofit valuable things, such as awareness and traffic.

In fact, marketing campaigns for nonprofits are essential for multiple reasons that keep any charitable organization functioning. Nonprofit marketing campaigns are made for the organizations to be able to create awareness and make target audiences aware both of the organization itself and the causes that it supports.

Aside from raising awareness, nonprofit marketing helps charities promote their causes, services as well as their fundraising efforts. This could be by encouraging people to become long-term members, to getting recurring donations so that the organization can reach the specific fundraising goals.

Furthermore, nonprofit marketing campaigns also engage the people who choose to participate in various initiatives from the organizations and get all the volunteers to get involved. They are also able to bring various issues and causes to a significant cultural prominence which can lead to social change.

Types of Marketing

The specific goals of a nonprofit marketing campaign tend to fall into four main categories, which include message-focused campaigns to build awareness or encourage change; traditional fundraising for monetary donations; event marketing which is focused around a single cause or event; and consumer charity where the nonprofit is partnered with a for-profit business that encourages their consumers to make purchases to help the organization.

Marketing Plan

The way that a nonprofit marketing plan is created is similar to the for-profit marketing plan, however, the charitable one might be more important. When creating a nonprofit marketing plan it’s essential to increase engagement and awareness without exhausting the team members, which requires a lot of balance.

However, in spite of all the challenges that nonprofits may have when it comes to creating a marketing plan, the foundations of the traditional marketing techniques and tactics. From understanding the target audience to be able to create the campaign, to making the campaign feel personal to that audience, to having the main goal in mind, and following up with any of the volunteers that participated or the people that donated towards the cause.

One of the main setbacks of nonprofit marketing campaigns is the fact that these organizations are not able to take advantage of many of the platforms that for-profit businesses use, due to the smaller budget.

Fortunately, there are plenty of inexpensive as well as free marketing platforms that nonprofits can use, and the best choice would be to use a variety of them. That way, the marketing plan can be as effective as possible.

Nonprofits can use social media platforms to share important information and keep up with the target audience. With search engine optimization (SEO) more visitors will be driven to the charity’s website. Targeted online ads can be free thanks to Google’s ad grants, and organizations can use tools such as Canva to create and design their own promotional materials or infographics that contain important information.
